A trigger component’s look comes from Encore. This page explains how Encore picks and tests looks, and what you can expect to see while a test runs.

How Encore picks a look

When Encore runs an experiment for a trigger component in your app, the user gets that experiment’s look; otherwise they get the trigger component’s default look. Encore can change or retest the look without an app update, and there is nothing to set in code. The looks Encore serves today are listed on each trigger component’s page: Gifts Button and Claim Reminder.

How Encore tests looks

Encore tests the looks of one trigger component for one use case: for example, the Gifts Button’s card against its banner at reward moments.
  • One assignment per user. Encore assigns each user once, and every entry of that trigger component, on every placement, uses the same look for that user.
  • Only users who could see it are counted. A trigger component checks that the reward sheet has offers before it asks Encore which look to show. A user with nothing to show is never assigned, so they don’t dilute the results.
  • What’s measured. Encore compares what users do after seeing each look, such as how many of them claim and finish an offer, not only how many tap.
  • What you do. Nothing in code. Encore sets up and reads the experiment. Ask your Encore contact about the looks you would like tested.

The holdout group

An experiment can hold some users out on purpose: either they see nothing even when the entry would show, or they see the default look. Encore compares them with the users who see the experiment’s looks, which is how it measures whether the trigger component changes what users do. So expect the entry to be missing for some users at times. That is the holdout working, not a bug. A Claim Reminder’s holdout always sees the default look, never nothing, because it shows a gift the user already claimed.

Turning a trigger component on

Encore sets a default look for each trigger component when it turns it on in your app, and runs experiments on top of it. Until then, the entry renders nothing, so you can ship your screens with trigger components in them before they’re switched on. To turn one on, ask your Encore contact or write to admin@encorekit.com.

Looks and SDK versions

A new look Encore adds later may use something an older SDK can’t draw. Encore only serves a user a look their SDK version supports. If an older SDK ever receives a look it can’t draw, it renders nothing instead of drawing it wrong, and logs a warning.
